Being in the Tamil Cinema industry for decades, M. Karunanidhi clearly shows how much he has known about writing films that have left significant marks in society. To add up to dozens of his masterpieces is the movie “Ilaignan” which is all about people who belong to the working class. It is in this film where the importance of respecting workers, paying them with the right wage and other issues of employees that the society faces today.

The script may come out as somewhat outdated but because the film clearly voices out what it wants to convey there is no problem with it. The strong dialogues Help out Karunanidhi to show the right emotion  needed by the scenes. The director, Suresh, has also done well with the movie and was really able to put into the cinema screen what Karunanidhi wants to show from his writing. The movie is definitely well done from the writers to the director, producer and the casts.

Ilaignan dates back to the time of 1959 where a ship building company in Tamilnadu is owned by Rajanayakam (Suman). Rajanayakam abuse his workers by giving them inadequate wages. Because the workers have no proper wage they do not have sufficient food and cannot meet their other basic needs. If any resistance is noted in the workers, Rajanayakam’s men will cater to it with violence. The fiancé of Rajanayakam, Sena (Namitha) who is very wicked controls him. The film then shows Kargy (Pa Vijay) who is the son of Arokiyasamy (Nasser) and Valliyammal (Kushboo). Kargy applies at the company for a specific reason. His father Arokiyasamy is actually killed by the men of Rajanayakam. It is with Kargy where big changes happen as he encourages other employees to join him to change the wrong doings of their employers. Kargy was able to get help from Meera (Meera Jasmine) and a love team emerges between Ramya (Ramya Nambeesan) and Kargy. A fight between Kargy and Rajanayakam settles everything but what happens in that fight is the reason why you should watch the movie yourself.

Worth mentioning is Pa Vijay who actually did really well with his role. His emotions were not just acting but seemed very real on screen especially on the climax of the movie. Kushboo is also a very convincing motherly role. Being the villain, Rajanayakam was able to pull off his character. The rest of the casts did what they had to.

Vidyasagar had a great selection of music for the movie. The cinematography done by B.L. Sanjay was perfectly done for the movie. Thotta Tharani who is the person behind the ship building factory should get two thumbs up for a well done set.
