A film that has truly placed the limelight on the cowboys, Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam or IKMS has definitely got it all for you. From horses to revolvers and even country music, IKMS will surely show you how Simbu Devan does it and does it good. Simbu Devan, director of IKMS has stepped beyond the borderlines and took the risk of enquiring into Tamil cinema a classy story of the Wild West with a twist. IKMS has genuinely captivated audiences because of the humorous storylines, fine actors and superb plots not to mention the tasteful outfits. The film’s quality was definitely not compromised and has made a big bang in the world of Tamil cinema.
It all begins with a narration done by none other than the director himself of the evolution of cowboys and how it has influenced certain parts of the world and for this film it focuses on south India. The whole scene already conveys to audiences anything and everything you would picture of cowboys and is first set on a village called Sholaypuram. The hero of the story is played by Singamuthu (Lawrence) who is a kind-hearted man and the antagonist is played by the Nasser as Kelaku Kattai. You will know this villain right away when you watch the film since he is creatively characterized with a man with only one eye. Not only does he hold the village of Jayashankarapuram in fear but he also held captive 5 other villages.
The climax arises when Singamuthu is blamed for stealing a valuable diamond from work and is then sentenced to death by hanging. This is where Ilvarasu, Ramesh Kannah and Vaiyapuri comes to the rescue and is headed by Mouli. They even get more amazed of Singamuthu because of his spitting image of Singam, the groups long lost leader who happens to be a courageous Marshall. They then agree to take Singamuthu and be referred to as Singam and bring him to village of Jayashankarapuram where their goal is to free their village from the wrath and wickedness of Kelaku Kattai.
Of course a hero cannot be a man of courage and strength if no lady falls for his charm and if he does not also find his pair and here, he finds Padmapriya, his love-interest. He also meets along the way Nasser of Irumbu Kotta and US Apuram with his side are his deputies Lakshmi Rai and Saikumar. We all know cowboys are always at work or at war with Red Indians, and the film’s cowboy motif is completed with the Red Indian Chief M.S. Bhaskar and his daughter Sandhya. The whole film is guaranteed to be packed with adventure and rest assured that laughter is a common denominator which makes it real fantastic and fun to watch especially for the kids.
Lawrence was definitely flawless in carrying his role. An ideal hero that he is, he has definitely placed bravery and confidence in big letters in his cowboy character. It would not be as justified if it were not for the prowess of the rest of cast Sai Kumar, Nasser, Bhaskar and Vaiyapuri to name a few. Simbu Deven was definitely deserving of a standing ovation for assuring a film that is fun-filled yet with a good storyline. So much effort was placed on the props and the costumes. The ideas of the costumes of clothes designer Sai is highly appreciated for creativity on what the casts will be wearing.
