For Suriya’s 25th film, he is under the direction of Hari in the film Singam. It is said that the film is initially offered to Vijay and is supposedly the 50th film under Hari’s direction but due to unfavourable circumstances Vijay was not able to do so which is why Suriya was then chosen for the role.
Suriya, with no doubt, was able to impress Hari and the audience with how he did well in his acting skills in the movie. For sure this made Hari think that Suriya, even if he was not the first choice, was the perfect actor for the character that was set for him in the movie Singam. The action-packed film that showed impressive stunts, sentimental lines and great chemistry with Suriya’s leading lady is one masala flick that people can look out for.
It is here where Singam shows to the watchers that being a cop does not entail a person to knock of goons and with the very intimidating look. Durai Singam, a police in Nallur, is in the field of being a cop because of his father’s ambition. But even so, Singam remains earnest to his job and is loved by amny in his place because he settles arguments in a good-naturedly manner. Then Mayilvaganan (Prakash Raj) enters the scene as a con from Chennai and gets ensared in a case that obliges him to be at the Nallur polic station for 15 days. A substitute then goes to Nallur to finish the task and this is when Prakash and Suriya bumps into each other.
Apart from the action genre is the love stroy of Anushka and Suriya. Anushka enters the film as a pretty lady who visits the village to see her grandparents and from there she meets Suriya. It was not love right away but the two eventually falls for each other. Erimalai portrayed by Vivek is the master of laughter in the film is actually Suriya’s “sidekick”. This is really helpful in making the film not to come out to stiff.
Anushka came out very promising in the film and has kept her glam for most part of the movie. Suriya’s parents, Radha Ravi and Sumithra are worth a mention for their persuasive acting.
The music of Devi Sri Prasad in the En Idhayam number was really good. There are just parts of it like the changing method of covering some frames were uncalled-for. As promised, Singam may be one action film but has not exaggerated bloodshed and violence. Thanks to Priyan the cinematography of the film was straightforward.
The direction of Hari was true to its genre of simply staying in that concept. Though the sequence of the film is somewhat predictable already, what is really amusing was how the director managed to keep the crowed amused the whole time. There may be dull moments in between the hero and the villain because there was not much intelligence placed on his role. But overall, the movie was a great catch.
