Thoonga Nagaram is another name for Madurai which is simply defined as the city that never sleeps. It is actually in Madurai where most of the movies filmed here have made it big and have become box office hits. Under the direction of newcomer Gaurav and producer Dhayanidhi Alagiri of Cloud Nine Movies, Thoonga Nagaram is a movie set at the temple town and centers on love, friendship and revenge.
Gaurav may be a new comer but he has managed to make a firm screenplay that becomes more and more interesting as one scene to another unfolds. He made sure that his film is far from the same from what movies on themes like this looked like. It is indeed filled with lots of action but less on violence.
Vimal, Nadodigal, Anjali, Bharani, Gaurav and Renigunta have essential parts in the film. It is on how their emotions come out where the movie largely relies on. The director was able to keep their acting close to the real thing and have found a way to imprint these emotions on them.
You will be surprised how the light and entertaining start of the movie which is closely themed to friendship unravels to turning into a suspense-filled plot. The fresh faces and Madurai Tamil make it all seem so real. Thoonga Nagaram revolves around four friends played by Vimal, Barani, Nishanth and Gaurav who all live in Madurai. They are the kind of youth who would do everything in order to survive. Vimal works as a wedding choreographer who falls in love with his childhood friend Anjali whom he comes across with as Anjali works as a compere in a local TV station.
Things turn differently when Vimal bashes a youngster who took scandalous videos of a girl and uses it to blackmail her. This youngster’s father finds out who does this to his son and finds a way to get back at him. At the same time, Vimal and Anjali prepares for their wedding. As to how and will the villains succeed in their plans is the very heart of the film.
Vimal was able to balance well with his role from being a high-spirited youth to turning serious on the next half of the movie. Anjali continues to grow as an actress and shows how comfortable she is with her role. Barani was able to give out his best same with Nishanth and Gaurav. The villain played by Chidambaram is the kind of bad guy who doesn’t have much body language but has the eyes doing it all.
The music of Sundar C Babu is something that we can hum to and the camera works of Vijay Ulaganathan is worth mentioning for he was able to get an angle of Madurai in an artistic manner and the editing of Suresh was excellent. Basically, Thoonga Nagaram is an exciting and entertaining movie though it can be predictable.
