Vamsam

Starring: Arulnidhi, Sunaina, Ganja Karuppu
Direction: Pandiraj
Music: Taj Noor Production: M K Thamizharasu

Vamsam is one film that is sought after because of two apparent reasons. First of all, the director of this film is Pandiraj who has earned much credit for his Pasanga movie venture which is why his followers are set out to find out what his next film is. The second reason is because Arulnidhi is set out to play as the hero of the movie which interests a lot of people to find out what he has to offer. The publicity of the media has also hyped up more audiences.

Vamsam kicks-off with Pandiraj trying to document everything there is to know about a community named Devar in the heart of Tamil Nadu. This community has 11 divisions that is known for a number of things:  vengeance, adventure sports and undeniable justice.

A tribe that stands out in rekla, silambam and other games is where Kishore belongs to. Meanwhile, Jayaprakash belongs to a tribe that punishes any form of shame. Jealous of Kishore’s achievements, Jayaprakash puts poison in his liquor that eventually kills him. Kishore’s wife, after her husband’s death raises their child away from what her husband does. Their son grows up to be a shy boy who is played by Arulnidhi who finished a course in Botany. He is having a hard time handling a cow (Asin) so he decides to sell it to the family of Sunaina but Asin runs back to their home. The event makes a love match between Sunaina and Arulnidhi and Asin is the reason why the two keeps seeing each other.

The father of Sunaina belongs to the tribe that is just and makes a judgement that is in favour of the servant of Jayaprakash whom he treated badly. Upset by the shame, Jayaprakash kills Sunaina’s father which results to Sunaina throwing a pail of manure to Jayaprakash on the streets which is the most humiliating thing ever to happen to a person. This incident prompted a series of events of revenge and what happens after it all is what Vamsam is about.

Sunaina proved in this film that no matter what role is set on her she can do well. Arulnidhi did well in his character of a passive and educated young man and this made him a promising actor. What makes the movie interesting is how the lovers talk in botanical terms. This is something that is new in the Tamil movie industry. The comical quips of Ganja Karuppu and Arulnidhi added humour to the film and Kishore and Jayaprakash were equally brilliant in their acting.

There are times when the screenplay can go shaky and too much wandering make it hard to get a connection with the film. There may events of murder in the movie but it was not shown in a gory manner. Mahesh Muthusamy’s cinematography is praiseworthy as he is able to capture great scenes most especially the Thiruvizha view. Taj Noor who was once the assistant of AR Rahman showed that he also has got talent especially with the number pada pada pattampoochi.
